Two very different beach days, both sold as paradise. Here is the honest difference, so you pick the one you actually want.
Playa Blanca is on Baru, reachable by road or by sea. It is the famous white sand strip, and it is genuinely beautiful. It is also the busier, more commercial option: vendors, day trippers, and a livelier stretch of beach. If you want the postcard sand and do not mind company, it delivers.
The Rosario Islands are farther out, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by boat, and they feel different. A protected archipelago of coral reefs and small islands, with beach clubs that control their own space. The water is clearer, the day is quieter, and the trade off is that you commit to a boat schedule.
So: Playa Blanca if you want the classic white sand and an easier trip, especially combined with the National Aviary on Baru, which is one of the best half days in Cartagena. The Rosario Islands if you want clearer water, a lounger with room to breathe, and a day that feels a little more removed from the city.
If you cannot decide, island hopping visits several Rosario islands in a single day, and the Aviary tour pairs birds with Playa Blanca. Tell us what matters most to you and we will point you the right way.
Neither is objectively better. Playa Blanca has famous white sand and is easier to reach. The Rosario Islands are farther, quieter, and have clearer water.
